Maximum clear span for W12x14From: happypete@gmail.com Category: Structural Email: happypete@gmail.com Remote Name: 64.202.127.120 Date: 30 Nov 2006 Time: 06:33 AM
CommentsI ended up with an extra 24' W12x14 steel beam from my house construction. I'd like to use it in my barn. It's supporting floor load only, with a tributary span 12 feet wide [barn is 36' wide, and there are two beams running down its length]. I'd like to replace the wood beams with a central column called for with the steel beam, with the column offset as far as possible towards the back wall, in order to make an open bay under the beam.
I can't figure out how to determine what the maximum span is for the W12x14 beam. I think the dead and live load factors are 10 and 45, respectively--but that's taken from my house plans.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
