Adding central air-house w/o ductwork

I’m shopping for an old house, preferably 2500 sq. feet or more, possibly up to 3 stories, that needs renovation. Many of the houses that interest me have radiator heat and no ductwork. I’m curious about the cost, difficulty, and practicality of installing central air in one of these old houses. I’ve often wondered why more of them have not had central air retrofits, which leads me to suspect such jobs are very costly or difficult to do. Can anyone enlighten me about the systems available and what they might cost? Any horror stories I need to know about? Thanks, - G. Mitchell
