Garage header

I need to increase the height of my garage door opening from 7 feet to 8 feet. My question has to do with the header. Currently there is a 4x12 that is 17 feet long as the header. I can raise the header 10 inches but that makes things awful tight. Can I replace this header with a steel I-beam or a laminated beam and possibly reduce the depth of the beam to gain the extra 2 inches for my opening? Any help would be great. Dave
