Cathedral Ceiling and A/C

I've just installed a 4 ton A/C unit. Manual J for this house called for 3 ton and the HVAC contractor recommended 4 ton based on 1800SqFt. We have cathedral ceilings in half the house with a loft, BR and Bath up. While the A/C keeps the downstairs a 73 degrees, the upstairs will not cool below about 82 (outside temp=~90-105deg.) It appears to me that the trapped hot air in the ceiling prevents effective cooling, the trapped hot air heats the incoming cold quickely due to the larg volume of hot air trapped under the ceiling. Question; is it a good idea to vent the ceiling to produce air circulation? I was thinking of installing a cupola that would directly vent the ceiling (not the "attic" area). Thanks, Fred Lynch
