Cracked Wooden Ceiling Beam

I have a diagonal crack in a wooden ceiling beam of about 40cm. The beam spans a room of about 6mtr. It is causing the floorboards above to sag slightly as the floorboards are joined onto this beam. Other than replacing it completely - which would be a major job; does anyone have an alternative as to how I can reinforce this beam? Would the addition of metal plates encasing the beamwork? Do they actually exist!!
