Sump Pump Float sticking

Our sump pump's float seems to be sticking. In the last week it happened twice. The sump pump "hole" is completely filled and some water comes seeping out of the concrete floor. Once we lift the float's arm, the sump pump comes alive and sucks away! The only time our sump pump filles that high is when the water softener recycles. The submerged pump looks kind of rusty, but seems to function when told. We bought the house in August'03. Can you give me some ideas on what to do. Are there replacement floats, do I need to clean it or simply just buy a new one? Please help ~ Thanks!
