CommentsI have two sperate split systems for my upstairs and downstairs. The upstairs furnace is located in my attic. I recently had two HVAC service Reps come to my home to evaluate and recommend improvements primarily for cooling performance. The 6 year old evaporator must be replaced. Both calculated 500cfm room for more return air. Both calculated 200cfm room for more supply air. Both focused on my foyer and master bedroom for supply and returns. The foyer has a large window (Southern exposure in North GA) and is a source of significant heat gain. The foyer measures 19H X 10W X 18L. It is supplied by a 4" duct at the top of the stairs. The first floor system has a return in the middle of the foyer.
One says add a 6" ceiling supply near the window in the foyer, add a 6" supply to the master, and convert the 4" ceiling opening (top of stairs)to an 8" return. The other says add an 8" return to the ceiling of the foyer, and add a 6" supply to the master.
So, one says return the heated air from the foyer, and the other says supply cool air to it. Which of these thoughts is best. Also, how does this effect heating the same space.
