I-Beam Strengthening

I actually have sveral different questions on the same subject. I am looking at replacing a load bearing wall in my basement to have a clear span in the middle. There will be a 3' wall at one end, an 11' wall at the other with the 20' opening in the middle. I gave the loads and the span to a structural engineer and he came back with either a W8-67 or a W8-58 beam. He recommended the 67 because the 58 would have about 3/4" deflection in certain circumstances (he mentioned dancing on top of the beam on the first floor). My first question is "Can I weld 3/8" or 1/2" plate on the sides of the smaller beam to give it more strength?" I am planning on supporting the beam using posts at each end with the posts resting on the existing stem wall where the wall was. I have drilled into the floor 8" deep and was still hitting concrete so with the stem wall that is at least 12" of concrete. Is that a good enough footing? If not, what if I put two posts one behind the other on each end to spread the weight out a little? Also, the place that I was going to get the posts from said he would make them to the proper height for me but don't I have to have an adjusting nut on them so I can raise them up and get them tight so the beam doesn't sag? The last question is "Once the beam is in place is it acceptable to weld the beam to the top of the post to hold it in place or is there a better way?" I thank you in advance for your advice.
