Replacing supporting beam in basement

My home is about 80 years old. It's a brick structure. The dimensions of the building are approximately 23' x 40'. I'm thinking of replacing the supporting beam in the basement. I've hear about the I-beams (TGI - OSB?) and that these particular beams do not need colums 8 feet apart to support it. Can you give me some insight to this material?
