CommentsYou had old oak floors removed because of staining and new 2 1/2" x 3/4" select red oak floors installed. Now, after sanding and 1 coat of water-based varnish and 2 coats of semi-gloss polyurethane, the floor shows a rippled washboard effect when the sun shines across the floor. Is this normal? They said it is just a nature of the wood. ANSWER=> Without seeing it first-hand it's hard to know exactly how severe the rippling effect is. First, you should be sure that the wood was sanded perfectly smooth prior to applying the finish. Next, you mention varnish...and then a topcoat of polyurethane. Normally, mixing finishes is not a good idea. Polyurethane is an excellent, durable finish...and it typically takes at least three coats, sometimes four coats, to give a smooth finish. Our floors are select Red Oak, just like yours. They are beautiful after 10 years...and they still have the original 3-coats of semi-gloss solvent-based polyurethane. There's nothing rippled about the floors....although, in just the right light, you may see a slight appearance of the wood grain, but nothing unusual. Builders Websource.
