You should be able to remove your existing Oak baseboards without having to pull up or replace your existing carpeting. Depending on how the baseboards were installed, the carpenter will often leave a 1/2" gap between the bottom of the baseboards and the subfloor. This provides a convenient spot to tuck under the edge of the carpeting. If the baseboards were installed flush with the subfloor, then the carpeting abutts the baseboard. In either case, you should be able to use a thin prybar to remove the existing molding, and replace it with one of your choice. Another alternative is to paint the existing baseboards white, or however you desire.
