Question: What size beam is required to support a bearing wall that will carry 615 lbs. per running ft. on an 8 ft. span? Answer: This depends on whether the 615 PLF is a uniform load (no other point or gradated loads) and whether you've accounted for the required live load component. Furthermore, seismic, wind and snow loads can materially impact the size of the beam. However, assuming the 615 PLF figure includes simple live and dead loads, for the purpose of an example, a 4x12 DF #1 beam would suffice. Your actual requirements may vary.
