Another steel beam as headerFrom: phoenic@aol.com Category: Structural Remote Name: 172.193.180.162 Date: 15 Oct 2002 Time: 08:21 PM
CommentsWe are considering installing french doors in the back of our house. The rough opening is 61 and 5/8" wide and 76" high. This low ceiling forces us to consider replacing the outside rim joist with a steel header, and then attaching the ceiling joists (2"x9") to the steel header (presumably with Simpson joist hangers and/or bolts), as we can't add a wood header per the norm.
Assuming that we need to go 6-8" past each end of the rough opening, what size steel beam would we need to adequately support the weight above? (This is a wood frame house, built 1923, one story above - bedroom, low pitch roof, climate = mild, no snow weight, total sq ft of house approx 1900; house rests on relatively level lot - maybe 20 degrees). Since steel is stronger than wood, would a 2"x9"x6' beam do the trick? Or is that too much steel for the structure itself?
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks
