Avoid putting it in direct sunlight or near other equipment that could artificially inflate the actual temperature. Ideally, locate the thermostat in a central location minimally susceptible to drafts. Try to identify an area of the house that seems to have a "balanced" temperature -- neither too hot nor too cold.
