Without knowing the load on the beam (in pounds per linear foot), it is impossible to compute the size of the beam. For example, is the beam only carrying a floor load from above? In which case, what are the overall dimensions of the loads?

Or, are there other loads, such as roof loads being passed through a wall onto the floor?

If you can give us as much detail as possible, including dimensions and types of materials, we might be able to make an estimate. But, if you are unsure about how to do this, only a licensed structural engineer can run these calculations for you based on actual site conditions.

You can also FAX a drawing of the floor plan, roof plan, and load-bearing walls to use at 650-299-0668. All dimensions must be clearly shown and types of materials noted.
