Lath and Plaster removal

I am presently removing most of the lath and plaster from a small story and half brick building. The brick wall appears to be one layer of brick thick with horizontal wood boards (inside) used as a basic frame.

My Question? Does the lath perform any strength function against torque. In other words am I weakening the basic structure at all when I remove the lath?? Thanks, d.
