Building A Staircase

We are in the process of restoring a house that was built in 1929. It has a steel pull-down staircase (attic access). We are looking to build a staircase to the attic, and need to know how to plan the stair case with a step height desired for the length of wall space available. Is there a website or "formula" that we can use?
