I had the same problem in a house I rent out. The problem was that the
supporting floor beam was not making contact with the post. This in essence made
the span too long. I inserted wedges between the post top and floor beam. It
worked in my case. 
 
(Editor's note: Yes! Thanks for this excellent suggestion. A slight gap
between the post and girder is common, particularly as new wood shrinks to reach
moisture equilibrium.)
