How to shingle a valley

My Father showed me how to do a valley by spliting rolled roofing into 1/3rd, 2/3rds. Place the 2/3rds piece centred down the valley, place the one third piece centered over that, and then shingle up to the rolled roofing and overlaping it. Then cut the shingles so the rolled roofing is exposed down the center of the valley, making the width of the exposed rolled roofing slightly larger as you get towards the eaves. (I think they used to use lead or aluminum sheeting instead of rolled roofing. Does this make sense?).

Now all I see is homes with the shingles overlaping at the valley's. I have seen some really bad water damage in these areas and it seems that the shingles really to turn up and deteriorate. Which way do you recomend?
