Do we need separate electrical circuits for a fridge and built-in microwave ?

We are remodeling our kitchen and will be adding a built in microwave. Our contractor is planning on putting the microwave and refridgerator on the same 20 amp circuit. The specs for the microwave say it needs to be on it's own 15 amp circuit. There is not a similar spec for the fridge but it does draw almost 12 amps. He seems to believe that this will be fine and pointed out that our previous kitchen had only one circuit and worked fine with the same type of appliances. He did note that code requires the microwave to be on one circuit but feels that is a very conservative requirement. His reluctance to put the microwave on a separate circuit is our panel doesn't have room for one more circuit. Should we expand our panel or will it be ok to use a 30 amp circuit for the two appliances instead of 20 amps ?
